Migraine Headache
What it Feels Like
People who suffer with migraines describe a throbbing pain on one side of the head.
Nausea and sometimes vomiting may accompany the pain and symptoms are often preceded by
sensitivity to light and sound. Vision disturbances (known as an aura) are experienced by
one out of five people with migraines. Migraines occur more frequently in women than in
men.
What Causes Migraines
While the cause of migraines is unknown, recent studies indicate that the pain results
from inflammatory changes in blood vessels induced by activation of certain nerves. One
theory is that migraines are due to a vulnerablility of the nervous system to sudden
changes in your body or in the environment around you.
It has been shown that certain foods trigger migraine headaches. Alcohol, especially
red wine and foods containing MSG and foods that contain tyramine have been reported to
trigger migraines.
